Originally from Edmonton, Tim Lemke is now based in Toronto and is quickly becoming one of the city’s most in demand guitarists and music instructors. He has had the opportunity to perform with some of Canada’s most prominent musicians, including Juno Award winning saxophonist Mike Murley, Juno Award winning pianists Jon Ballantyne and David Braid, Kelly Jefferson, Tara Davidson, Kent Sangster, Jim Vivian, Pat Collins, Charlie Austin, Terry Clarke, Sandro Dominelli, Terry Promane, Craig Brenan, Dave Young, Jim Brenan, The Urbanites and countless other jazz, rock and pop artists. In addition, Tim has shared the stage with international jazz icons Dave Liebman, Tim Ries and Wycliffe Gordon and has opened for Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band and the Will Vinson Group.
In addition to his significant performing experience, Tim is a dedicated educator, having taught hundreds of students. Tim has worked with many students in both private lesson settings as well as in master classes and clinics. He has taught both amateurs and professional musicians ranging in age from five to eighty years old. He has also taught at every level of the school system, from elementary schools to universities. Tim finds as much joy in teaching as he is does in performing, and is an exciting and inspiring teacher and clinician. In addition to teaching the guitar, he also teaches ukulele, bass, mandolin, music theory and composition.
Since beginning his guitar studies at a young age, he has grown to become proficient in a plethora of musical styles including rock, pop, and jazz. Tim has received both a Master of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance with Honors from the University of Toronto. There he studied with many of Canada’s finest jazz musicians including Mike Murley, David Braid, Geoff Young, and David Occhipinti among others. In addition, he studied classical guitar with renowned classical guitarist and teacher Dr. Jeffery McFadden. Tim also holds a Certificate in Jazz Guitar Performance from New York University, and a Diploma in Music Performance with Distinction from Grant MacEwan University where he studied with jazz guitarists Jim Head and Jamie Philp.
Artistically, Tim is interested in creating music that is not only intellectually exciting, but also emotionally moving. He believes that music should always contain strong and beautiful melodies, a concept that is continually emerging in his own unique approach to the guitar. Most recently Tim released a CD of all original music with his trio entitled “Right Around The Corner” which has received great reviews.
As a teacher, Tim strives to inspire and equip his students to reach their own unique musical potential. Whether his students have aspirations to pursue music as a career or to play music for their own enjoyment, Tim enjoys working hard to ensure that his students reach their personal musical goals.
